When the temperature drops and snow blankets the ground, many people retreat indoors. But as I shared in the latest episode of the Something in the Wild podcast, winter can be one of the most rewarding seasons for outdoor adventures—if you’re equipped with the right gear. Here, I’ll break down my go-to layering system and cold-weather essentials to keep you warm, comfortable, and ready to enjoy the great outdoors.

Layering for Success: Lower Body Essentials

1. Base Layer: Start with merino wool three-quarter long johns. These are a game-changer, providing warmth while wicking away moisture. Staying dry is key in cold weather, as damp clothing leads to rapid heat loss.

2. Mid-Layer Pants: Over your base layer, wear durable pants that add insulation and can withstand rough terrain. Thick materials that resist wear and tear from briers or brush are ideal. Even jeans can work in a pinch, but purpose-built outdoor pants are better.

3. Puffy Pants: If you haven’t tried insulated puffy pants, you’re missing out. They’re perfect for staying warm during stationary activities. Look for zip-up styles for easy removal when you’re on the move and overheating.

4. Waterproof Outer Layer: Top it all off with waterproof pants to keep snow and moisture out. These also protect your puffy pants from snags and maintain insulation effectiveness.

Upper Body Layering System

1. Base Layer: A merino wool long-sleeve base layer provides the foundation for warmth and moisture management. Affordable options can be found online, but even regular wool works in a pinch.

2. Mid-Layer Jacket: A fleece jacket or hoodie adds active insulation. It’s perfect for retaining warmth while you’re moving around. Look for options with a hood for extra coverage.

3. Puffy Jacket: My go-to insulation layer is a puffy jacket with reflective material inside. It’s so effective that it often makes me too warm during activity. This layer traps heat efficiently, ensuring comfort even in frigid temperatures.

4. Waterproof Outer Layer: Your final layer should be a waterproof and windproof jacket. These outer shells are indispensable for cutting wind chill and keeping you dry. Rain jackets often outperform “windproof” jackets by providing total protection from the elements.

Footwear and Accessories

1. Socks: Thick merino wool socks are my go-to. They wick moisture away, keeping your feet dry and warm inside insulated boots. This is essential for both comfort and preventing frostbite.

2. Insulated Boots: Pair your socks with reliable insulated boots to keep your feet toasty, even during prolonged exposure to the cold.
